Little Katie is continuing her fussy ways. We’ll all be glad when “teething season” is over. I got the following series of emails from my wife today.
Little Katie was so fussy today that she only wanted a bit of yogurt…a new taste for her. She started to make that “sour puss” face when she doesn’t want more…
————————————————————
Katie is still up!!! Unbelievable. I gave her Tylenol – no luck. I just put her into the swing – like a newborn!!!
Hopefully she will fall asleep in a swing – she’s been up since 2 pm! And it’s 6:30…
At least she is not crying – whined a few times, but not as bad as it was before…
DONE!!!!!!!!!
————————————————————
I told my wife that I can take little Katie for a drive when I get home if she thinks that will help. Little Katie didn’t wait that long. She was so exhausted that she couldn’t stay awake any longer…
WHAT I LEARNED TODAY
———————————
1) Little Katie is very fussy when she is teething.

I cleaned up the playyard last night so little Katie had a free slate to mess up this morning…
——————————————————————-
We are doing fine. Katie enjoys her play-yard – from time to time she gets tired of it, then I read her a book or give a new toy and she is happy again. I gave her a few pears – at first she didn’t like them without a banana, but I added a little bit of rice cereal and she finished the whole bowl!
The good news – I cleaned the kitchen, had a nap together with Katie. The bad news – I haven’t started working yet… Will try now. In an hour Katie should be going to bed…
From Trader Joes we need milk, bananas, apples, berries. Oops – Katie is fussing, maybe you’ll think of something yourself – have to go…
——————————————————————-
Tomorrow will be three days after my wife gave little Katie some chicken, so she will get her first portion of yogurt. You need to wait three days after you introduce a new food to see if the baby will have an allergic reaction to it.
I was watching the news this evening and little Katie was peering out through the playyard…mesmerized. She loves to watch television, but we try to keep her from watching it when possible.
WHAT I LEARNED TODAY

1) Little Katie likes to have a clean playyard to get up to.

7:33am – I just got up. I hear little Katie testing her vocal chords out in the living room. Going to go see what’s up…
I had to put a new doorknob on the front door this morning. Like most things in our house, it’s time for a replacement…
My wife came to see me around 11am this morning saying that she was exhausted and going to bed for a nap. Little Katie was in bed and would be asleep soon. Little Katie had other ideas. She was making so much noise that I eventually took her out of the nursery and brought her to be with me. We had lots of fun. First she played with the remote and yelled with delight at the fitness show on tv. She had great fun playing with an empty envelope and we even sang songs for a while. When my wife woke up we realized that little Katie was not interested in sleeping so we left to run some errands.
We picked up some arts and crafts supplies this afternoon. We will be making little Katie a Halloween costume this year.
This has been a tough night with little Katie. She wouldn’t sleep during the day and this continued into the night. In the end my wife gave her a baby tylenol. Gradually the cries subsided…and the chipmunk was asleep.
WHAT I LEARNED TODAY
———————————
1) That baby tylenol can do wonders when nothing else seems to work.

Today little Katie is 8 months old. In less than 2 months it will be Halloween. We are already talking about what costume she will be wearing.
I got up late this morning so my wife took little Katie out for a stroll.
Remember I mentioned how we are starting to keep everything out of the reach of little Katie? Well, the photo to the right pretty much says it all don’t you think?
I went on a diaper run this morning. I was hoping to pick up 4 boxes of #3 diapers at Target but they only had one box left. Oh well, that will last us for a while. I also picked up some “Yo Baby” yogurt and natural chicken breasts.
Little Katie had her first taste of chicken today. It was mushed up in some sweet potato, so perhaps she didn’t even realize it.
Another Skype session with my mother this afternoon. We were talking about our plans to hopefully come to see her this Christmas.

4:08am – “A haaaaa” from the nursery. Is she up or is she not? That is the question of the moment.
Little Katie is getting stronger and stronger in the legs. When I lift her up now she can almost stand up by herself. She has this little smile of achievement on her face, and of course we praise her for this effort.
The photo to the right shows little Katie trying to get some traction for her “fast as I can go” sprint around the Activity Station. It’s much harder to get a grip when she has socks on.
7:07pm – Little Katie was playing in the Activity Station when my wife walked by. She held her arms outstretched so that my wife could pick her up. This is the first time we saw her do that. She usually tosses her arms about in an attempt to show she can play patty-cake.
Little Katie was able to grab ahold of a pack of papers on the table near the Activity Station and they all came tumbling down. We have to make sure that everything she is not supposed to touch is out of her reach these days.

My wife went to the dentist and took little Katie along. She was the perfect little angel, looking at everything and giving nobody no problems. The dentist even commented on how nobody would know that she was there if they didn’t see her.
Little Katie is quite accustomed to the “Mozart Music Cube” now. She can turn it on and turn it off whenever she wants.
Little Katie was able to push down the “froggie’s head” (see photo to the left) on the Activity Station this evening. This causes the little bowl of balls below the head to spin around this little maze. She is gradually getting more and more acquainted to everything this station has to offer. Be for you know it she will have outgrown it completely.
Little Katie loves to watch the television. I wonder how much this is due to the fact that we don’t like her to watch the television? She will peer out of her playyard and watch “whatever happens to be on”. Many times I will shut it off once I see that she is trying to watch it. I guess that the various little kiddie videos are just around the corner…but let’s try to delay this particular stage of growing up for as long as we can…
WHAT I LEARNED TODAY

1) Little Katie enjoyed her first trip to the dentist.

The roofers are back. It’s 9am and they are already up there pounding and walking. Little Katie is playing in the activity station in front of me. Whenever she hears them she looks all around trying to figure out what’s going on.
Hurricane Earl is barreling down on us. Hopefully I won’t see my new roof in the neighbor’s yard in a few days.
The playyard has been a real blessing. We can put little Katie in there most of the time and she will just “attempt to crawl” around and play with all the various toys (see photo to the right). They have become her friends and she greets each of them (and puts them in her mouth).
Little Katie really likes it when I tickle her in her ribs. You can see that little grin come over her face. I’m not sure if this is something that is “hard-wired” into a human being or not.
WHAT I LEARNED TODAY

1) Little Katie is reacting to being tickled now.

My wife and I had an appointment with the lawyer this afternoon so I had to leave work at 3:45pm. I drove by the house to pick up my wife and child and we then drove to see the lawyer. My wife sat in the back of the car so she could feed little Katie. If you don’t have the time packaged foods can sure come in handy when you are on a trip, but my wife made today’s selection of “mush”…
On the drive home little Katie fell asleep. Rather than get home and wake her up removing the car seat we decided to go to the grocery store. As my wife shopped I drove little Katie around in the car. By the time the shopping was done, little Katie was up. All-in-all she had about a 45 minute sleep.
My wife told me that little Katie has figured that she can make noise by clanging two plastic toys together (see photo to the right). She has always liked toys that emit sounds, such as the speaking baby doll or giraffe or toy cell phone, but she is starting to learn more and more the pleasure of generating various sounds and noises by herself. I am sure that she likes the reaction she gets from mom and dad as well. The two toys that she has in her hands in this photo are from this toy.

My wife had already left when I got up this morning. She has a department meeting and I will be taking care of little Katie for the morning. Little Katie is still sleeping and I have the baby monitor next to me waiting for the “moan from the nursery” which is sure to come…
When little Katie got up I changed her and proceeded to feed her. Changing went as usual, but the feeding was to be much more troublesome. She wouldn’t drink the milk that I had warmed up so I tried to feed her some fruit “mush”. She wouldn’t have any of that either. What a “sour puss” face as I tried to bring the cup and spoon closer to her face. Play time…
The photo to the left shows another dress that my wife picked up for little Katie. It was bought at the same time as this dress.
After playing for quite a bit I decided that I would try another round of the feeding process. Same results. Hmmm… Maybe the milk is bad…try heating up another serving. No luck. How about some packaged baby food? No go…
By now it was time to take little Katie to meet her mother. We agreed to meet in a parking lot and transfer little Katie. While my wife would drive little Katie home I would go off to work. I told my wife the problems I had with little Katie and let her take over from there…
WHAT I LEARNED TODAY
———————————
1) Little Katie ate like a trooper yesterday…but not today.

My wife and I took little Katie for a stroll today. This is the first time we have taken her for a stroll in a long time. We are already getting into the mode of doing more stuff for ourselves now that my wife’s mother is no longer here.
I had to lower the crib today (see photo to the left) as little Katie is soon going to be so big that she will be able to crawl over the side and fall out.
My wife sent me the following email this afternoon:
——————————————————————————————-
Our chipmunk grew in a matter of days… When I put her to bed for the nap, she would not sleep. Usually she had no problems falling asleep. So a bright idea came – maybe she is hungry? She never used to have solids before her first nap, but times may have changed. So – I tried the usual sweet potato-rutabaga-broccoli mix. Katie ate it in 5 minutes as she would eat pureed fruits which she loves. For a while feeding her veggies was a challenge. Not today! I took another portion of sweet potatoes, added a little bit of rice cereal – Katie finished that portion too. After I put her to bed this time, there was no fuss.
The lesson: it seems that from now milk is becoming just a drink and Katie needs “real” food to be full. ![]()
——————————————————————————————-
We all went to a Mexican restaurant this afternoon. There was a family behind us and that little girl proceeded to become the center of attention. She would sit on the table and scream and even started to lick the top of the salt shaker. I was thinking, I’m sure glad that is not little Katie…
Little Katie finished her first box of oatmeal today.
I was playing with little Katie this evening and she was almost standing up by herself. Her feet were flat and she was supporting her own weight. She just needed a bit of balancing from my hands.
