I picked up Bobby at Huband this afternoon. Katie had no work to do so her mother came and picked her up early.
Bobby’s teacher, Mrs. Nelson, is getting my wife to bring pizzas to Bobby’s class sometime soon. I guess his teacher said she would. She’s calling it the “Snicker of Magic” party!

The chickens wanted to go out today so I let them out (see photo to the left). I’ve been keeping them in the coop till the eagle situation dies down. Copilot told me: In Courtenay, BC, bald eagles typically feed their young from late March to early July.
On the drive home Bobby and I talked about how this would probably be his last week of school if she was back in Chapel Hill. He now has one birthday party to go to each weekend, and then off to Lithuania!
Katie was talking to her friends Annika and Madeline about clubs. They are thinking of joining the Debate Club. Their art teacher Mr. Randall was fully supportive of it. Apparently they even get to go to Vancouver on trips!
The kids had their viola/violin lessons this evening.
My wife sent the following email to Hello Ms. Brach, Katie’s guidance counsellor, today:
Thank you so much for helping Katie with her grade 10 schedule. We have some questions and if it’s easier, we would be happy to come and meet with you.
Our questions are the following:
- NIDES courses. Over the summer, Katie will be taking PHE10 and Careers part A. We will be travelling for the most of July, so would like to know more details to help us plan:
- Does Katie have to wait for the last week of school to register for NIDES or could she register now and start taking those classes right away?
- For Careers, I heard in one of the meetings that it’s 6 assignments or something like that. However, for PHE, does the class have to run for the span of 4 months or so? E.g., if she starts it on July 1st, would it end at the end of October? Can Katie take some time off from it during the summer?
- When Katie finishes Careers part A, could she also register for and take Careers Part B? Does she need your approval for that (or any other courses)?
- Would she be allowed to take Psychology 11 at NIDES this summer? Again, would it run into fall or does it depend on Katie’s pace studying and completing assignments?
- Graduation requirements. With the current schedule, she would get 38 credits in grade 10. If she wants to graduate a year early, she would need at least 42 credits in grade 11, correct? Regular schedule can fit in only 32 credits, so she would need 10 more online credits (that’s why we are looking into possibly more courses this summer):
- Someone mentioned that driving school can be counted as an elective. Is that true and how many credits could Katie get for it?
- If Katie takes Math 12, can it be counted as both Grade 12 required course and an elective course?
- Among grade 12 electives, there are quite a few ending with ‘11’, e.g. Life Science 11. Would they count towards Grade 12 required courses? Or should electives specifically end with 12?
