Day #5706 – (Wed., Aug. 20, 2025) – RC Boat On Maple Lake!

Our former hairdresser in North Carolina, CiCi, texted me this morning to see how things were. AI stocks have taken a beating these last two days, and I told her to remain calm. They are just leveling out for their next push upward. I also told her that I took this chance to purchase a few more shares of NVDA, and this seemed to comfort her.

This afternoon I took Bobby out to Maple Lake for Daddy/Son Day #96. Before we left home, I charged up the battery and pulled out a permanent marker to write our phone number inside the boat — just in case it ever got lost. Without the controller, it wouldn’t be much use to anyone else, so they might as well return it. It felt smart to plan ahead.

Maple Lake holds history for us. On November 9, 2024, almost a year ago, Bobby caught his very first trout there — his first time fishing ever! Today we returned, not with rods but with the RC boat we picked up in Victoria. The boat tore across the water fast and true (see photo to the left). Of course, adventures rarely go perfectly. The battery ran out quicker than expected, and at one point the boat got stuck in the shoreline bushes. Some women paddleboarding nearby let us use a paddle to free the boat, turning what could have been a frustration into a moment of kindness.

After the lake adventure, we were hungry, so we drove back into Courtenay. We stopped at Local’s Pizza, near the Courtenay Pharmacy, and shared a medium pineapple pizza — Bobby’s favorite. Sweet fruit on salty cheese is one of those combinations people either love or hate, but for us, and especially Bobby, it worked perfectly. Next door we picked up three taro bubble teas — one for Katie too — and the pearls bouncing through the straws made it feel like a treat, a little celebration of the day.

While we ate our Local’s Pizza at one of their tables, I asked ChatGPT about the world’s strangest pizzas. Three options were: banana curry in Sweden, cicada pizza in the U.S., and reindeer in Finland. Pineapple pizza seemed tame in comparison! Bobby and I chatted about this, and since Local’s Pizza has free WiFi, we watched BeardMeetsFood devour a huge pizza on YouTube!

Firetrucks were going crazy in Courtenay this evening! Something must be up…
