I took Bobby out for Daddy/Son Chat Day #22 today! We went for boba tea at Poke Page in Courtenay. He ordered honeydew milky boba with pearls this time! We also took home a taro milky boba for Katie. We sat together at one of the tables and played this little quiz game that we picked up in Victoria at “Thrifty Village” (see photo to the right)! Questions like “Super Bowl” and you had to know it was football, or “Flatiron Building” and you had to know New York. It was fun, light, and a small but meaningful moment of connection.
During the outing Bobby and I talked about the “Jackson” incident that happened on Thursday at Huband. I had him relate his side of the story to me first before giving my take and advice… In a “nutshell”, Jackson was playing with a bunch of boys and ended up pushing Bobby. One of Bobby’s friends told the teacher and the principal soon got involved.
I told Bobby how different things are today compared to when I was his age. Back then, they taught young boys to fight back, and if you got a teacher or parents or “whoever” involved, other kids would laugh at you as you were not fighting your own battles. Well, that’s bad advice, on so many levels! It’s much smarter to involve teachers and principals if it happens at school, and if you are out of school, even employers, and perhaps even the police if needed. If you take matters into your own hands it is possible that you will be viewed as the aggressor and punished. Teachers, principals, employers, and the police are here to help us, and we should involve them when needed. Wished I had realized that when I was growing up…
