Day #5749 – (Thu., Oct. 2, 2025) – Chicken Roosts

Bobby got the chance to drive his eBike to school today. He wanted to meet up with Isaac, the other boy in his class with an eBike, so that they could have a ride together.

Bobby has been “singing” as of late. My wife asked him why and he said he was just happy. He’s happy to have his eBike back, and things are looking up for him. If there is one particular reason that this move to Canada was good, along with others, it’s the fact that Bobby gets to have a much better life, with more close friends, and great exercise opportunities!

After school today Katie accompanied me to Home Depot this evening to pick up some dowels and supplies to create roosting areas for our chickens. I stopped off at Shar-Kare, and two people there, along with all the videos I’ve watched, seem to have differing views on what chickens like to perch on. The lady behind the counter said that one of her customers said they really like a swinging perch. At home depot I picked up two differing dimension dowels, a 2 x 4, a 2 x 2, and some chain…

So, when I got home, I built a swinging perch, and put the 2×4 up on the wall so that the could climb up and get to the higher roosting areas if they prefer (see photo to the left). The idea is to just let this sit for a while as these roosting areas are quite easy to move now and we can see if they like this or that or whatever.

I booked a room for two nights at the Wyndham Hotel in Oyster Bay this upcoming Thanksgiving weekend. Bobby has expressed a desire to go back there and enjoy their pool and slide, and this will be his chance. I haven’t told him yet but he will be so excited! This will shape up to be a rather elaborate Daddy/Son Day (or weekend), something that I’m sure he will remember for years to come…

We checked on the chickens later this evening and the hens joined Valentine on the middle roosting area (see photo to the right), so they were able to figure it out and maneuver around somehow…

Oh, an interesting note about Valentine, our “psycho” chicken. This evening he wasn’t staring at the walls, but was giving me quite the problem in putting up the new roosting areas. Perhaps he didn’t want his roosts messed with, but it was close to sundown so perhaps he was just tired and wanted to go to bed.

Today was “supposed” to be the day where Katie went to her first “Model UN” club meeting after school in the art class. Unfortunately, nobody showed, just kids doing art. Mix up somewhere… She’s gonna check with the teacher and find out what’s up.
