Day #5781 – (Mon., Nov. 3, 2025) – Bobby WINS Drawing Contest!

There are interesting dynamics in the chicken coop these days… Our Hmong mixes are VERY chill! Nothing bothers them. They were having a dust bath when Pandora (the large Spotted Sussex who is the “Mother Hen” it seems) basically jumped on them. They got up and shook it off and went back to what they were doing.

Pandora was very mean to her mother Empress today. Power struggle it seems. Last night Empress was scared to perch so my wife put her in a nesting box.

Yesterday we let all young hens out from the coop so that Empress and “Scaredy Rooster” Valentine could have some peace and quiet together and it seemed to help. Tonight Empress went up to roost! And Valentine seems to love having her! He started moving further from the coop door (he used to always stay by it) and even went out to bring Hmongs inside!!! The little hen we got on the weekend (who Bobby named “Pebbles”) is quite a character and every adventurous! She is exploring everything and has no problem with the other hens. She even found a water resource behind the coop when she was let out.

With all these hens we are needing to get a lot more chicken feed. We need more mealworms now.

I logged into the Duolingo app, which the family uses to learn languages, but they don’t have Tagalog. No problem, I have found some free resources to learn it.

My wife found a brand new book in Bobby’s backpack today (see photo to the right). Here’s the story! Apparently a few weeks ago Huband had a contest to color and fill in a pumpkin with drawings. Half the school, about 200 kids, participated and 20 of these were winners. Bobby was one of them! Since Bobby was one of the first kids to run to the library this morning (he wanted to make sure he’s not late for today’s field trip to Nymph Falls) he had many prizes to choose from! Some of the other prizes were pens and bookmarks. He and Esca almost finished reading the book on the bus while on the way to the field trip!)

Since Bobby won a prize he is really interested in taking drawing lessons now, specifically figure drawing. His teacher Mr. Chris has some recorded videos he can watch, but I certainly don’t mind paying for art lessons if he wants those as well at some point.

Katie found her friend Dylan from Chapel Hill in a “Model UN” photo today. I don’t remember them having that club when I was in high school. My wife’s boss Jeanette said that they had it when she was a student but she was not interested.
