Day #5854 – (Thu., Jan. 15, 2026) – Autistic Barbie

The driver’s license for all three of us, my wife, Katie, and I, arrived in the mail today. Katie’s license looks very unique, I guess that they want to make sure everyone knows she is a beginner driver. You can see a “mockup” of this “Learner’s” driver’s license in the photo to the right.

My wife managed to change Bobby’s dental surgery for 7 am at the North Island Hospital tomorrow, so I will be taking Katie to school. She needs to be there at 9 am so I will be leaving at 8:50 am.

I told Bobby that I picked him up some drinkable yogurt and regular yogurt yesterday, but if he can think of anything else let me know. When I was a kid they told us that afterward we could eat unlimited ice cream…something to have the kid look forward to I suppose…

Mattel has just launched a new Autistic Barbie doll! ChatGPT says: “Mattel has released its first-ever “Autistic Barbie” as part of the Barbie Fashionistas line, designed with input from the Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN). The doll includes several thoughtful details meant to reflect common autistic experiences, such as noise-cancelling headphones for sensory sensitivity, a small fidget/sensory toy, and a tablet-style AAC (communication) device. Even the doll’s styling choices—like a slightly averted eye gaze and sensory-considered clothing—were shaped to feel more authentic and respectful. The release has been widely praised as a meaningful step toward representation for autistic children, while also sparking discussion about the fact that autism is a broad spectrum and no single doll can represent everyone’s experience.

I was planning on going for a coffee this evening, and even made it to the car. My leg felt a bit wobbly so I decided to not risk it and just turned around and came home. Now that we have a family doctor we will have one point of contact for issues such as this… Maybe they will be able to send me to a knee replacement specialist if the physio therapy sessions (first one on Monday) don’t go anywhere…
