My wife and kids left for Vancouver just before noon today. I’m here in Courtenay taking care of the animals.
The water was pretty choppy on the ferry from Nanaimo to Vancouver. They docked at around 2:30 PM, then walked a few blocks to the bus stop in the pouring rain, dragging their suitcases. To their surprise, not a bus came, but a trolley bus! 🚎 These days you don’t even need to worry about buying tickets, just tap any credit card and go.
They soon came to the apartment, unpacked, and Katie and her mom went exploring the neighborhood. They visited a few thrift/vintage stores and then went to a grocery store to get some food for dinner & breakfast. They each had California roll sushi while Bobby had a PB&J sandwich.

Next up was an elevator to explore the rooftop of their 12 story building (see photo to the right). They went to the gym for a bit. Bobby took a bath and went to bed.
In regards to taking care of Batman and Maple, the routine is rather involved. Batman is getting a lot more energetic and less groggy so he even managed to work his way out of his sweater this evening.
Here’s the daily routine:
- 8:30 am – Batman needs eye drops (1 drop in each eye), an antibiotic blue pill, and “hopefully” liver support Zentonil.
- Check on Batman’s dry food, refill if needed. Canned food is in the fridge by Katie’s desk, give him some. It’s important that he eats with antibiotics, so put some canned cat food on a paper place in front of him on the bed and he usually eats a few bites. The old paper plate and the empty can go into the garbage bags hanging on the wall of Katie’s closet.
- Scoop the litter a few times a day (since we are making sure he pees/poops OK) and put it in the garbage bin next to it in the closet.
- Maple needs to go out and pee/poop, play a bit. Walk her on the leash to poop, but it might be enough to just take her out. when you come back she needs breakfast. I change her water daily (refill from the fridge). She has 1 cup from a big container, 1/4 cup from a smaller container, 1 Dasuquin chew (break it in a few parts) and 4 multivitamin chews. I also give chews as treats and get her to sit for them, but you can just put them into her bowl. Also 6 pumps of fish oil on a plate for her to lick.
- 1:10 pm – Eye drops for Batman. Take Maple out. You can give her a bone.
- 5:50 pm – Eye drops for Batman. Take Maple out. She can have dinner. 1 cup from the big container, 1/4 cup from a smaller container.
- 8:30 pm – Batman needs antibiotic (blue pills) and eat a bit.
- 10:30 pm – Batman needs eye drops. Just before you go to bed, take Maple out to pee (go out to the apple trees and say: “GO POTTY”. When she pees you can throw the ball a few times and go home.
- Eye drops are supposed to be given 4 times, but the times shown don’t have to be super precise. Taking the antibiotic pill twice is the most important thing.
