Day #5708 – (Fri., Aug. 22, 2025) – Hen Hunt!

Katie is back to doing artwork (see photo to the right).

We’ve been racking up the dentist bills with cleanings and fillings so we decided to go ahead and get some dental insurance. AAA oddly enough has an option, but it covers a lot of things, so this is the one we chose. Coverage starts on Monday.

I drove my wife and Katie out to Merville this afternoon looking for some hens. Valentine seems rather lonely these days so we are in the market for some companionship for him. My wife made a cardboard box with some air holes that she made with the blunt end of a screwdriver. With the cardboard box in the back of the van, we were off.

We ended up at Shorewolf Farm. They have a wonderful little bakery there and my wife picked up a hearty loaf of bread. Katie and I patted the mascot, a HUGE Irish Wolfhound, which was relaxing near the cash register. The owner told us that they were bred to kill wolves and hunted in packs. Imagine the terrifying sight of seeing this huge animal lunging toward you!

Though Shorewolf didn’t sell hens, they put us on to “Black Creek Farm & Feed Supply”, so we stopped in. They do sell hens, at about $20 each, but won’t have any till early October. We put ourselves on this list, but there is no obligation to buy.

Next up was Shar-Kare down the road. They told us that they plan to have hens in early September, so that looks like our best option. We picked up some “Mealworms” for Valentine while we were there.

Kristine arrived back in Victoria this evening! She found the gift basket that we left for her.
