Bobby is sick today so no school. He was “stuffed up” on Sunday and mentioned on the drive home that he might not be able to go to school on Tuesday! Getting in and out of that hotel pool and then stepping into cold, dry air conditioning in the hotel room probably didn’t help!
At 2:30 pm this afternoon I went to Thrifty’s Foods to get a flu shot. I then drove to Shar-Kare to pick up some “Chick Starter” feed.

Katie was upset this afternoon when she got home from school. She got a 78 on a science/physics test! I told her that I got a 77 on my grade 11 physics test once, so she did one better than me… 🙂 That seemed to cheer her up, and gave her hope that it was not the “end of the world”. On a more positive note she did get 100 on her French quiz, so her grade is now up to 91 from 88.
Bobby started to feel better as the day went on so he had energy to work on his Halloween costume. He’s decided to be a Plague Doctor this year. He got some food dye out and experimented with red and green to make “blood” and “antidote” (see photo to the right).
This evening Katie and I went for a drive. She didn’t want Starbucks or McDonald’s this evening, so I went through the McDonalds drive-thru and picked up a small black coffee for $1.05.
The chicks have been tearing through food like little feathered vacuum cleaners—only in reverse. They peck, fling, and scatter grain all over the ground like confetti. When I got home, I filled their feeder again and stood for a minute watching the whole flock move around. The grey hens, the ones with Vietnamese breeding, are almost as big as our spotted hens now. It’s funny how quickly growth sneaks up on you. A month ago they were fragile, almost nervous little birds; now they strut with this strange confidence. It reminded me that progress is often quiet until it suddenly isn’t.
