This afternoon the family and I went to Benino’s for a little treat (see photo to the left). Bobby and my wife each had a medium gelato, Katie chose a small one, and I enjoyed a double espresso instead. Bobby was still hungry afterward, so I went back and bought him another medium bubblegum gelato.
While we were there, we started looking through our games to find something to play. Bobby wasn’t interested in Cosmoxopoly because it takes too long to set up and play, and a few of the other games we tried were missing dice, cards, or other pieces. So, I came up with a simple card game inspired by the old game of “Old Maid” (sorry, not really politically correct, but that’s what we called it back in the day) that I used to play as a kid. I paired up matching cards—for example, the two black fours, the two black tens, and the two black kings—and left one ace without a matching pair. We took turns drawing cards, laying down pairs as we made them, and whoever was left holding the lone ace at the end lost the game. It turned out to be surprisingly fun, and we sat there playing hand after hand for quite a while.
Afterward, my wife wanted to see the ocean before we headed back so I drove to Goose Spit. The weather was beautiful—warm and sunny, but much more comfortable than the heat we’d had a couple of days earlier. Everyone got out and wandered along the beach. One thing that caught my eye was a tiny plastic triceratops someone had placed on top of one of the weathered wooden posts overlooking the water.
Remember Genshin Impact? It was one of the main games that Katie used to play way back in the days of COVID-19. Well, she’s back into it, and taking Bobby along for the ride. Both kids spent quite a bit of time playing it this afternoon.
So… We come to find out… On Tuesday, during recess, principal Walters stopped by Bobby and told him that he did well and was very gifted. She was at the little school performance the kids gave to Bobby’s class. Miss Hudson sent one of her students to go and get her to see them perform.
